Moulded Particle / Sediment Filter 10 Micron 10 x 2.5
How Pleated Water Filters Work
1. Pleated Surface Media = More Area
Unlike standard moulded polypropylene cartridges that rely mostly on depth to trap particles, pleated filters are made from a flat sheet of filter material that’s folded (pleated) into many layers.
This pleating dramatically increases the total surface area inside the same 10″ × 2.5″ cartridge size.
Why surface area matters:
-
More area = more places for particles to collect
-
Slower build up of blockage
-
Longer time between replacements
2. Mechanism of Filtration
Pleated filters mainly use surface trapping, not depth trapping:
Water flows from the outside of the pleats, through the filter media, and into the inside core.
As water passes over the media, particles ↑10 µm are held on the surface of the pleats or embedded slightly in the media.
Because the surface area is large, particles spread across many folds instead of piling up quickly in one place.
3. Typical Applications
Pleated sediment filters are very versatile and used as pre‑filters in many water systems, including:
-
Under‑sink drinking water systems
-
Whole‑house filtration pre‑stages
-
Pre‑RO (reverse osmosis) stages to protect membranes
-
Aquarium and pond pre‑filtration
-
General sediment removal from municipal or well water
In all these systems, the pleated filter removes sand, dirt, rust, silt, and suspended solids before the water hits more expensive or sensitive filtration stages (like carbon blocks, RO membranes, UV, etc.).
4. Washable / Reusable
One of the nice features of many pleated filters:
You can rinse them out a few times before replacement.
How it works:
-
Remove the filter from the housing
-
Gently rinse between the pleats with clean water
-
You can use a soft brush or low‑pressure spray to remove trapped sediment
-
Let it dry and reinstall
This helps:
✔ Extend the life of the filter
✔ Reduce how often you buy replacements
✔ Maintain better flow rate over time
